The commercial problem

Time is recorded. The financial warning often comes too late.

TimeWIP connects every time entry to the amount paid, the applicable VAT rate and the hourly rate, so the remaining working time is always visible.

Missed time

Capture telephone calls, emails, attendance, preparation, travel and waiting before the detail is forgotten.

Uncontrolled WIP

See the value of work in progress for every file rather than discovering the position at month-end.

Unrecoverable work

Receive an early warning before funds held or the agreed budget are exhausted.

Built from real litigation experience

Why TimeWIP exists.

TimeWIP was created by a busy and experienced litigation solicitor who understands the reality of urgent, high-value legal work. During intense matters, the overriding focus is rightly on performing for the client: responding quickly, protecting the client’s position and achieving the best possible result.

The difficulty is that, while the legal team is working around the clock, recording time and monitoring funds on account can become secondary. By the time the financial position is reviewed, substantial additional work may already have been undertaken beyond the amount held.

That can lead to an awkward conversation after the event, unnecessary tension, fee disputes, complaints, write-offs and difficulty recovering costs. It is far better for both solicitor and client to know the position in real time and discuss further funding before additional work is undertaken.

Built by a litigation solicitor. Designed for modern legal practice. Created to protect the client relationship and the value of professional time.
A familiar weekend

Stop searching for missing time. Capture it when it happens.

Many solicitors spend evenings and weekends reviewing WIP reports, cross-referring them to files, attendance notes, emails and telephone records, identifying missing billable work and then spending hours inserting those missing entries into the practice management system.

That process is slow, expensive and avoidable. Some time is inevitably lost because the detail is no longer fresh. TimeWIP is designed to remove this inefficiency by making immediate mobile time capture the easiest part of the working day.

Designed to be one of the quickest time-entry workflows on the market

Select the file, activity and time, then save. *A typical preset entry can be recorded in under three seconds once the file and common activities have been configured.

1Review the WIP report and identify gaps.
2Cross-refer the report to the file, attendance notes and emails.
3Identify telephone calls, preparation and other work that was never recorded.
4Spend valuable personal time inserting missing entries.
TimeWIP avoids the entire process by capturing time at source.
Real-time client transparency

Complete the work, record it and keep the client informed.

A solicitor travelling on business may spend 30 minutes advising a client by telephone and a further 30 minutes preparing and sending a follow-up email. TimeWIP enables that hour to be captured immediately, the WIP and remaining funds to be updated, and an end-of-day summary to be emailed directly to the client if the firm chooses.

The client sees the work undertaken and the cost incurred while the matter is progressing—not weeks later. This improves transparency, demonstrates the value of professional time and supports timely, informed discussions about additional funding.

Action
The TimeWIP difference

Warning signals before the work becomes a write-off.

For each file, TimeWIP deducts VAT from the funds received, calculates the net amount available for professional fees and converts that amount into allowable hours.

  • Funds received and VAT are entered once for each file.
  • Remaining time updates automatically after every entry.
  • Users can see when to request a top-up before continuing work.
  • WIP reports can be filtered by file, activity and date range.
From time entry to hearing

Prepare Statements of Costs using the time already captured.

TimeWIP is designed so the same structured entries used for daily time recording can also support the preparation of Statements of Costs for summary assessment. Rather than reconstructing work from emails, diaries and file notes before a hearing, firms can organise recorded time by fee earner, activity, rate, disbursement and VAT.

  • Telephone calls and communications
  • Emails and correspondence
  • Attendances and conferences
  • Preparation and document work
  • Travel and waiting
  • Disbursements and counsel’s fees
  • Hourly rates and fee-earner grades
  • VAT and hearing attendance costs
England and Wales update: Practice Direction 44 states that a Statement of Costs for summary assessment should follow Form N260 as closely as possible. From 14 April 2026, the updated Rolls Building Practice Note requires parties in the Rolls Building courts to file and serve the bespoke Excel version of Form N260 in addition to a signed, read-only PDF. The requirement applies to summary assessments in the Chancery Division, Commercial Court, Technology and Construction Court and London Circuit Commercial Court.
